Hi All

Yesterday in my playing group, we had a discussion about casting cost of
artifact lands:

Is it {0} or doesn't it have a casting cost?
I know its not a spell, and thus wouldn't be affected by stuff that alters
spells casting cost etc..

The reason this came up was, that I had an Gorilla Shaman in play and wanted
to destroy a Seat of the Synod with it.
Is that possible?

See card details below.
TIA, Jan

Artifact lands have no casting cost. Their converted mana cost is 0, though.

The Mox Monkey can destroy the Seat of the Synod (or any other Artifact
Land) by paying 1 colorless.

203.1. The mana cost of a card is indicated by mana symbols printed on
its upper right corner. Tokens and lands have a mana cost of {o0}.
Paying an object's mana cost requires matching the color of any
colored mana symbols as well as paying the generic mana cost
indicated.
***

Lands do have a mana cost, defined at 0. And though these are
Artifacts, they are not spells, and there's nothing on the card or in
the rules that indicates they should have anything but a zero mana
cost.

***
212.2f Artifact lands combine the characteristics of both the land and
artifact types, and are subject to spells and abilities that affect
either or both types. Artifact lands can only be played as lands. They
can't be played as spells.
***
Also, they are artifacts, so they are subject to artifact destruction,
such as your gorillas possess.

The rules call this the 'mana cost' of a permanent. The relevant rule:

203.1. The mana cost of a card is indicated by mana symbols printed
on its upper right corner. Tokens and lands have a mana cost of {0}.
Paying an object's mana cost requires matching the color of any
colored mana symbols as well as paying the generic mana cost

Things like Trinisphere won't affect players playing artifact lands, no.
Artifact lands follow the rules for playing lands, not the rules for
playing spells.

Yes.

See card details below.
The current Oracle text:

Gorilla Shaman {R} Creature -- Ape 1/1
{X}{X}{1}: Destroy target noncreature artifact with converted mana
cost X.

You can choose 0 for X, and then target a Seat of the Synod: it correctly
matches "noncreature artiface with converted mana cost 0".

By rule, artifact lands, like all lands, have a mana cost of {0}.

Nothing ever alter's a card's mana cost or converted mana cost.

Yes, X is 0, and a Seat of the Synod is a perfectly valid artifact, and it
has converted mana cost 0.

Noncopy tokens, and lands, have mana cost 0. Thus a land's converted mana cost
is 0 also.

Yes; playing a land isn't the same as playing a spell.

Sure; it's an artifact with cmc 0. (It's also a land; the Mox Monkey doesn't
care about that.) It will cost you 1 (= 0 + 0 + 1) to do this.
